The Combat Teachers Brigade

In Mexico, when teachers go on strike, it sometimes involves fisticuffs, tear gas, and running battles with the police.

The WifeWonk taught English in the Mexican public school system for a number of years while we were living south of the border.

A few years ago, when the teachers in our then-hometown of Mexicali went out on "sit-down" strike, (they occupied the schools while refusing to work) we marched in a protest parade along with some 10,000 other educators.

Then as now, many Mexican teachers earn about $100 per week.
